Interior Painting and Decorating in Edinburgh

We're Edinburgh Painting Specialists, a small, independent, family-run decorating business. We paint flats, tenements, period homes and new builds across Edinburgh. That covers anything from one tired bedroom to a full flat before you move in or sell.

Most of what you notice in a finished room comes down to the preparation underneath. So before any paint goes on, we fill, sand, repair and protect.

What we do inside your home

Walls and ceilings

We paint walls and ceilings in the finish that suits each room: flat matt for living rooms and high ceilings, and harder-wearing finishes for halls, kitchens and bathrooms. Tall tenement ceilings and cornicing get the extra time they need.

Woodwork: doors, skirtings, facings and banisters

We paint or stain doors, skirting boards, facings, window boards, staircases and banisters. Old woodwork is cleaned, sanded and filled first, so the new coat sits smooth and lasts.

Kitchens and bathrooms

For rooms that get steamy, we use moisture-resistant paints. They stand up to condensation and regular wiping. See also our kitchen cabinet painting service.

Feature walls and specialist finishes

We do a bold painted wall, a papered chimney breast, or a textured or high-gloss finish where you want something different. See wallpapering and feature walls.

Colour advice

Not sure between three shades of grey-green? We're happy to talk through colours, test patches and how each shade will look in your room's light. Edinburgh's north-facing tenement rooms can make a colour look very different from the chart.

Preparation comes first

  • Furniture moved and covered, and floors and carpets sheeted before we start

  • Cracks filled, dents and dings repaired, and surfaces sanded and primed. Bigger repairs are covered on our plaster repairs and surface preparation page

  • Old wallpaper removed where needed, and walls made good

  • Clean, tidy working every day, with a proper clean-up at the end

Period homes and tenement flats

Much of Edinburgh's housing is a hundred or more years old: lath-and-plaster walls, deep cornicing, ceiling roses, panelled doors and shutters. These need a gentler approach than a new build. We repair old plaster before painting, take care around original details, and choose products suited to older surfaces. Read more on our paints and products page, or in our blog post on painting historic Edinburgh homes.

What our customers say

"His knowledge and skill brought a drab, beat-up flat to life… He did a beautiful job repairing old plaster walls prior to painting." (Google review)

"He always makes sure the floor/carpet and other stuff I got covered properly before he starts painting, which leaves my properties tidy and free of paint marks." (Google review, landlord with two properties)

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to paint a room or a flat in Edinburgh?

Every quote is free and based on a visit, so we can give you a real figure rather than a guess. The price depends on the size and height of the room, the condition of the walls and woodwork, how much repair is needed, the number of coats, the paint you choose, and whether the rooms are empty or furnished. We'll set out exactly what's included in writing.

How long does it take to paint a room?

A typical bedroom or living room usually takes one to two days, including preparation and two coats. Rooms with high tenement ceilings, cornicing, lots of woodwork or plaster repairs can take longer. A whole flat is often a week or more. When we quote, we'll give you a realistic timescale and keep you updated if anything changes.

Do I need to move my furniture before you arrive?

Please clear small items, ornaments and anything fragile. We'll move the larger furniture into the middle of the room ourselves and cover it, along with floors and carpets, before any work starts. If a room needs to be fully empty, for example for ceiling work, we'll tell you when we quote.

Can you paint my flat while I'm still living in it?

Yes. We regularly work in occupied homes. We usually do one or two rooms at a time so you always have somewhere to sit and sleep. We keep the work area tidy at the end of each day and work around you. One customer told us we were happy to fit around the renovation work she was doing at the same time.

Do you supply the paint?

Usually, yes. We supply trade-quality paints and materials as part of the quote, which means we know exactly what's going on your walls. If you've already chosen a particular brand or colour, that's fine. We'll tell you if we think a different product would suit the surface better. More detail is on our paints and products page.

Do you work in older and listed properties?

Yes. Much of our work is in Edinburgh tenements and period homes, with old plaster, cornicing and original woodwork. We repair before we paint, protect original features and choose products suited to older surfaces. If your property is listed, check with the council before changing exterior colours or materials. Like-for-like interior redecoration rarely needs consent, but we're happy to talk it through.
