Wallpapering and Feature Walls in Edinburgh
Good wallpapering depends on the wall underneath. Edinburgh's older walls are rarely flat or square, so preparation is where we spend our time. That way your new paper hangs straight, the pattern lines up and the joins disappear.
Wallpaper hanging
We hang wallpaper, from classic patterns to bold modern designs, in single rooms, stairwells, hallways and feature walls. Patterns are matched carefully, and we plan the layout around chimney breasts, alcoves and doorways so the most visible joins sit in the best place.
Wallpaper removal and wall preparation
Stripping old paper, sometimes several layers of it, is a job in itself. We remove old wallpaper, repair the plaster underneath, fill and sand, and seal the walls. Where walls are uneven, we can hang lining paper first for a smoother base. See plaster repairs and surface preparation.
Feature walls
A feature wall is an easy way to add character: a statement paper behind the bed, a papered chimney breast, or a strong painted colour. We can help you choose between paper, paint or a textured finish.
Painting after papering
Many customers combine papering with a full redecoration. We can paint the ceiling, woodwork and the remaining walls in the same visit. See interior painting and decorating.
Frequently asked questions
How much does wallpapering cost?
Quotes are free, and we'll look at the room first. The cost depends on the size of the room, the type of paper (some designer and patterned papers take much longer to hang), how much old paper needs removing, the condition of the walls, and whether lining paper is needed. Your written quote will show what's included.
Do I need to buy the wallpaper myself?
Usually you choose and buy the paper, because it's such a personal choice. We'll measure the room and tell you how many rolls to order, allowing for pattern repeat and a spare roll. Check that all rolls have the same batch number. We're happy to give advice before you order.
Can you hang wallpaper on old, uneven walls?
Yes. That's common in Edinburgh's older homes. We repair and fill the plaster first, and where the walls are particularly uneven we often recommend lining paper underneath. It gives a smoother, more stable surface, which helps the finished paper look better and last longer. We'll explain what your walls need when we quote.
Do you remove old wallpaper?
Yes. We strip old wallpaper, including several layers or painted-over paper, then repair any plaster damage underneath and prepare the walls for paint or new paper. Sometimes stripping reveals loose or blown plaster. If it does, we'll show you and explain the options before going any further.
